Former world No. 1 doubles champion Rennae Stubbs believes the psychological edge required to defeat Novak Djokovic is no longer as daunting for his opponents.

Since his Australian Open quarter-final win over Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic has struggled to regain momentum. The 24-time Grand Slam champion was forced to retire in the semi-finals against Alexander Zverev due to a hamstring injury, then suffered early exits in both Doha and Indian Wells—losing to Matteo Berrettini and Botic van de Zandschulp, respectively.

Now ranked world No. 5, Djokovic is determined to bounce back at the Miami Open, where he faces Rinky Hijikata in his opening match.

Stubbs: ‘Players Know Djokovic Can Be Beaten’

Speaking on her podcast, Stubbs pointed out the inevitable effects of age and confidence on Djokovic’s game.

“At some point, you hit an age where things just get harder,” she said. “At 38, you get a little slower, a little less confident, and you start to question yourself more.

“He hasn’t won a title since the Olympics last year, and no matter who’s in your corner, you have to convince yourself you can still win.

“These younger players are improving rapidly, and the key difference now is that they no longer see Djokovic as untouchable. That mental hurdle is easier to overcome.”

Djokovic’s Training Sessions with Coach Andy Murray

Stubbs also revealed an intriguing practice court exchange between Djokovic and his coach Andy Murray in Miami.

“I saw them discussing something about Djokovic’s forehand from about 20 meters away. He’s always looking for small improvements, whether on or off the court.”
