Rafael Nadal Opens Up on Retirement and Life After Tennis

Rafael Nadal has reflected on the reality of retirement, three months after bidding farewell to professional tennis at the Davis Cup Finals.

Since stepping away from the sport in November 2024, the former world No. 1 has kept a low profile, making few public appearances. However, on Monday night, he made a rare outing to accept an award and provided an update on his post-tennis life.

Nadal Reflects on Retirement at Awards Ceremony

The 22-time Grand Slam champion was honored with the Extraordinary Trophy at Mundo Deportivo’s 77th annual Grand Gala, where the Spanish media outlet celebrated his illustrious career.

Now 38 years old, Nadal admitted that stepping into retirement had left him feeling somewhat detached from the sporting world.

“Since I retired a few months ago, I’ve been a little out of this world for a while,” he confessed. “I’m happy. I feel happy to share this day with all of you, at this Gala surrounded by athletes.”

Moving on from Tennis: A New Chapter

While many athletes struggle with life after retirement, Nadal revealed that transitioning away from the sport has been easier than expected—largely due to how difficult his final years on tour were.

“On a personal level, I am happy, and on the other hand, I am trying to adapt to what is a new phase of my life. For now, I’m coping very well,” he shared when asked how he was handling retirement.

“At the moment, I do not miss the day-to-day. I’m fine as I am. In the end, the last few years were difficult, which also helps me not to miss it so much. I retired three months ago, so I can’t say it with total clarity, but for now, I am fine.”

After enduring a series of injuries, Nadal finally announced his retirement plans in October 2024 and played his last match just weeks later. His career had been plagued by physical setbacks, especially during 2022 and 2023, forcing him to play a limited schedule before eventually calling it quits.

Life Without Pain: Nadal’s Biggest Victory

Although injuries overshadowed his farewell to the sport, Nadal shared positive news—he is no longer in constant pain.

“Now I’m in very little pain, and I’m not really pushing myself too hard. I’m able to live with very little pain, and that’s very important for me,” he revealed.

Even simple, everyday activities have improved significantly for him.

“In the end, getting up and going down the stairs normally is a very important step forward for me in my daily life—being able to live with the peace of mind of not having much pain.”

While his tennis career may be over, Nadal appears to be embracing a pain-free future, stepping into retirement with gratitude and a sense of peace.
