Rennae Stubbs and Andrea Petkovic disagree over Aryna Sabalenka after her behaviour is criticised following her lose to Madison Keys
Rennae Stubbs and Andrea Petkovic offered differing views on Aryna Sabalenka’s emotional reaction following her loss in the Australian Open final.
Sabalenka’s impressive 20-match win streak in Melbourne came to an end after a tough defeat to Madison Keys in the championship match. Sabalenka had been aiming to become the first woman since Martina Hingis to win three consecutive Australian Open titles. However, after falling short in the 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 loss, Sabalenka’s frustration boiled over, leading her to smash her racket after the match.
Rennae Stubbs and Andrea Petkovic weigh in on Sabalenka’s reaction
The final was a fiercely contested battle, with both players producing their best tennis in the decisive set. Keys sealed the victory with powerful forehand winners in the final two games, leaving Sabalenka visibly upset as she smashed her racket after shaking hands at the net and quickly left the court.
On her podcast, Rennae Stubbs criticized Sabalenka’s outburst, suggesting it wasn’t a good look for the world number one. Stubbs pointed out that Sabalenka’s frustration stemmed from thinking one of Keys’ returns had been out, saying, “She lost her mind because she thought the return was out, but smashing the racket wasn’t a good look. She’s usually so gracious, and she was in her speech, but that’s a moment she’d probably want to take back. You can’t take that moment away from Madison.”
In contrast, Andrea Petkovic took a more understanding approach. “You live and die by the sword you swing,” she said, explaining that Sabalenka’s fiery emotions are part of what makes her such a compelling player. “If we love Sabalenka for her emotions, we have to accept the bad with the good. We can’t enjoy her funny dances and warrior spirit without understanding the other side.”
Aryna Sabalenka reflects on her reaction
After her outburst, Sabalenka returned to the court for the trophy presentation and graciously congratulated Keys on her win. In her post-match press conference, she explained her frustration, acknowledging how close she was to a significant achievement.
“Well, there was definitely frustration because I was so close to achieving something incredible,” Sabalenka admitted. “When you’re out there fighting, and things aren’t going your way, it’s tough. I needed to release those negative emotions to be able to give a respectful speech. I was just trying to let it go and be a good person.”
Despite the emotional ending, Sabalenka’s grace during the trophy presentation and her reflection afterward showed her growth as both a player and a competitor.
