Jannik Sinner Set to Resume Training on April 13 Following WADA Agreement
Italy’s Jannik Sinner will be allowed to return to training on April 13 after reaching an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The 23-year-old, widely regarded as one of the top players in men’s singles tennis, is currently serving a three-month suspension.
Under the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) guidelines, Sinner can train with his support staff as long as it is not at a facility linked to a national association, ATP, ITF, WTA, Grand Slams, or any regulated event. “According to ITIA rules, a player can train with his team as long as it is not at an official tournament venue,” a member of Sinner’s coaching staff told Tennis Italiano.
Sinner initially tested positive for the banned substance clostebol in two doping tests conducted in March 2024. However, after a thorough hearing, the ITIA ruled him innocent, attributing the positive result to a cream used by one of his coaches for an injury.
The situation escalated in October when WADA appealed the ITIA’s decision, seeking a two-year ban for the world number one. The legal battle concluded on Saturday when WADA announced a settlement, allowing Sinner to serve a reduced three-month suspension.
“The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) confirms that it has entered into a case resolution agreement in the case of Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, with the player accepting a three-month period of ineligibility for an anti-doping rule violation that led to him testing positive for clostebol, a prohibited substance, in March 2024,” WADA said in a statement.
Sinner is expected to return to competition following the completion of his suspension.
