Back in Washington 7 years later

“It seems like nothing has really changed since 2017, it’s a very beautiful place. My career has changed a lot since then. I am here because I got injured for Wimbledon and I haven’t played for a while. I felt I needed to regain my confidence and game level before heading to the US Open. I need to play some matches, and that’s why I’m here,” Sabalenka explained at the American tournament’s Media Day.

Her Wimbledon absence

“It was a tough decision because I never withdraw from tournaments due to injury. Even if I was injured, I would still play. It was tough, but I could play. It was my first experience with this, but I decided to take care of my health, do the proper rehabilitation, come back stronger. It was tough, doing exercises all day. It’s like you disconnect, but you keep doing exercises. Then I started training and recovering little by little. I hope this injury won’t bother me again, for now, everything is going well, and I’ll be able to play the next Grand Slam, which is my favorite. I’m looking forward to performing well there.”

Her goals for the end of the season

“We never set goals because it’s pretty obvious the goals we all have. The main goal for me is to sit down and talk after each tour to discuss what worked, what could be improved. The goal is to be a better player. Learn and improve after every defeat, as well as go as far as possible in the most important tournaments.”
