Rennae Stubbs Calls for Permanent Ban on Stefano Vukov After WTA Investigation
Rennae Stubbs has voiced strong opposition to Stefano Vukov’s presence on the WTA Tour, claiming she has personally witnessed multiple instances of his mistreatment of Elena Rybakina. The former coach of Serena Williams believes the 37-year-old should be “banned forever” from coaching in women’s tennis.
Stubbs’ remarks come after the WTA concluded its investigation into Vukov’s conduct and upheld his suspension. A report by The Athletic provided further details, confirming allegations of verbal abuse against Rybakina.
What the Investigation Revealed
According to the report, Vukov was found to have verbally insulted the 25-year-old, at one point calling her “stupid” and allegedly telling her she would “still be in Russia picking potatoes” without him.
The investigation also highlighted concerns regarding Vukov’s intense training methods, which were believed to have contributed to Rybakina’s injuries and overall health struggles.
Additionally, it was revealed that Vukov and Rybakina stayed in the same hotel room during the Australian Open, leading the WTA to suspect a romantic relationship between the two—raising further concerns about a potentially unhealthy dynamic.
Stubbs on the Toxicity of Controlled Relationships
On The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast, the former doubles world No. 1 did not hold back in her assessment of the situation.
“I clearly was around this toxic environment with him and her quite often. I have spoken about it many times,” Stubbs stated.
While some argue that Rybakina has the right to make her own decisions regarding her coach, Stubbs believes the situation is more complex.
“Yes, it is her decision, but there are a lot of cohesive, controlled relationships that get really toxic and really bad. Do I think that she is in an environment that is not healthy for her? Absolutely. There’s no question about it.”
Stubbs also pointed out that it was no coincidence that both Goran Ivanisevic and Rybakina’s fitness trainer left her team after the Australian Open, suggesting further turmoil behind the scenes.
“He Should Be Banned Forever” – Stubbs Doubles Down
The six-time Grand Slam doubles champion made her stance clear, calling for a permanent ban on Vukov.
“Honestly, he should be banned forever on the WTA Tour!” Stubbs declared. “He should not be allowed to come on tour and work with any girl because that’s his tendency.”
Despite the WTA’s findings and the heavy criticism aimed at Vukov, Rybakina has continued to stand by him, denying the allegations.
With tensions still high, it remains to be seen whether Rybakina will reconsider her coaching situation—or if the controversy surrounding Vukov will continue to cast a shadow over her career.
