Serena Williams’ ex-coach Rennae Stubbs highlights major flaw in Coco Gauff’s serve after tough Indian Wells & Miami runs
Rennae Stubbs Critiques Coco Gauff’s Serve After Disappointing Indian Wells and Miami Performances
Former tennis star and coach Rennae Stubbs, who previously coached Serena Williams, has pointed out critical flaws in Coco Gauff’s serve following a pair of early exits at Indian Wells and the Miami Open.
During a recent discussion, Stubbs shared her candid thoughts on the technical issues hampering Gauff’s game.
“Coco had a disappointing month in Indian Wells and Miami. Did you see her service motion? I only saw it on video, but it was enough,” Stubbs said.
In her straight-sets loss to Magda Linette in Miami, Gauff committed 12 double faults, which raised serious concerns.
“Her grip is wrong. Her elbow drops too low and stays too close to her body. The left arm collapses. There are so many little technical flaws that are going to be long-term problems unless corrected,” Stubbs explained.
She continued by referencing tennis legend Billie Jean King:
“Bad technique breaks down under pressure,” Stubbs said. “You can’t be serving 11, 12, 13, 14 double faults a match. That’s just unheard of at this level.”
Despite the criticism, Gauff remains focused and optimistic about her future. She recently announced the launch of Coco Gauff Enterprises, a move signaling her ambition to expand her influence off the court while continuing to grow as a player.
“This is just the beginning of an exciting new era for me,” Gauff shared on Instagram. “As always, tennis will continue to be my main priority. From the moment I picked up a racket, I’ve believed my purpose extends beyond the court.”
Gauff, still only 21, has time on her side. While serving issues have become a recurring concern, her talent and drive suggest she’ll work to overcome them—both on the court and in her new ventures off it.
