Former world number five Daniela Hantuchová believes that American tennis star Coco Gauff is the only player capable of stopping world number one Aryna Sabalenka at this year’s Australian Open. The first Grand Slam of 2025 is in full swing, with top players from around the globe competing for the coveted title.

In a recent report by Tennis 365, Hantuchová named Gauff as the player with the potential to prevent Sabalenka from claiming her third consecutive Australian Open crown. Hantuchová even compared Gauff to former world number one Serena Williams, highlighting the young American’s powerful presence on tour.

“She’s got it,” Hantuchová said. “When she arrives at tournaments, there’s this aura about her, similar to what Serena had. The calmness, the confidence—everything about Coco this year feels right. Sabalenka may be the clear favorite, but if anyone can give her real trouble, it’s definitely Coco. I wouldn’t be surprised if she lifts the trophy this year.”

Gauff, who had an impressive run in Melbourne last year before falling to Sabalenka in the semifinals (7-6, 6-4), has secured her place in the third round of the current tournament after defeating Jodie Anna Burrage in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. The 20-year-old, regarded as one of the top players in women’s tennis, will face Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the round of 32. Fernandez advanced by defeating Spain’s Cristina Bucsa, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
