“She’s Had Her Career Back to Front”: Tim Henman Hopeful for Emma Raducanu’s Title Success After Miami Open Run

Tim Henman remains optimistic about Emma Raducanu’s future success, despite the unconventional trajectory of her career. The former British No. 1 noted that Raducanu’s path has been “back to front”—winning a major title early before struggling to build consistency and physical resilience.

Raducanu delivered one of her strongest performances in recent memory at the Miami Open, reaching the quarterfinals before falling to Jessica Pegula. Pegula later lost to Aryna Sabalenka in the final.

Looking ahead, Raducanu is set to compete in the Billie Jean King Cup next week, followed by the Rouen Open. Her decision to enter lower-tier tournaments suggests a strategic approach to gain match wins and prepare for bigger events like Rome and Madrid.

Coaching and Adaptability

Mark Petchey was in Raducanu’s corner during the Miami Open, though his commitments with the Tennis Channel make a full-time coaching role unlikely. Henman, however, believes that Raducanu has become accustomed to frequent coaching changes and will continue to adapt.

“Petch (Mark Petchey) is working for the Tennis Channel, so he can’t commit full-time. It’ll be interesting to see Emma’s next move because when she talks about having fun and being authentic, that allows her to express herself on the court,” Henman said during Sky Sports’ coverage of the Miami Open Final.

Henman also acknowledged Raducanu’s unique approach to her career:

“She does things differently. She’s very comfortable changing coaches, which isn’t typical, but it works for her. The most important thing now is building physical resilience. That’s been missing because she won a Grand Slam without having that foundation. The big positive this year is that she’s competing more consistently. Hopefully, the results will follow.”

Raducanu’s focus now shifts to the upcoming clay-court season, where she hopes to continue her steady improvement and make deeper runs in tournaments.
