Six-time Grand Slam champion suggests she would be interested in becoming Emma Raducanu’s next coach
Rennae Stubbs Expresses Interest in Coaching Emma Raducanu
A multi-time Grand Slam doubles champion has thrown their name into the mix to become Emma Raducanu’s next coach, following the recent departure of Nick Cavaday.
The 22-year-old Brit is once again searching for a new coach, with Cavaday stepping down in January to focus on his health. Raducanu has had a long list of coaching changes since her historic 2021 US Open triumph, working with Sebastian Sachs, Nigel Sears, Andrew Richardson, Torben Beltz, and Dmitry Tursunov in quick succession.
Now, six-time Grand Slam doubles champion Rennae Stubbs has suggested she would be open to working with Raducanu, explaining how she would approach the challenge.
Stubbs’ Vision for Raducanu
Speaking on her self-titled podcast, Stubbs expressed her interest in coaching Raducanu, outlining the first steps she would take if given the opportunity.
“I would consider it, of course,” Stubbs said. “I would never say no to an opportunity of working with a Grand Slam champion.
“The first thing I would do is sit her down and ask her what she wants. I think that’s the key. You have to know what your player wants. A lot of coaches come in thinking, ‘I’m going to tweak this or that,’ but I would take a different approach.”
Stubbs emphasized the importance of realistic goals, rather than immediate Grand Slam expectations.
“It’s about an honest conversation—where is her top level, and how can she get there? It’s not about saying, ‘We can win another Slam tomorrow,’ because at this point, that’s unlikely. Instead, I’d focus on what’s realistically achievable and work towards that.”
Stubbs’ Coaching Experience
If Raducanu were to hire Stubbs, she would be bringing a wealth of coaching experience to the table.
- Karolína Plíšková (2018-2019) – Coached the former World No. 1 during a key stage of her career.
- Sam Stosur (2021) – Helped Stosur win the US Open women’s doubles title alongside Zhang Shuai.
- Eugenie Bouchard (2020) – Worked with the former Wimbledon finalist during her comeback attempts.
- Serena Williams (2022 US Open) – Assisted Williams in the final tournament of her career at Flushing Meadows.
While coaching Raducanu would present a unique challenge, Stubbs’ experience working with top WTA stars could make her an intriguing choice. With the French Open and Wimbledon on the horizon, the search for Raducanu’s next coach will be one of the biggest talking points in tennis.
