Wawrinka Criticizes Handling of Jannik Sinner’s Doping Case

The handling of Jannik Sinner’s doping case has sparked frustration among several players, with many questioning the controversial out-of-court settlement that led to his three-month ban (Feb. 9 – May 4).

A Controversial Decision

World No. 1 Sinner, following legal advice, agreed to a settlement with WADA to avoid a trial at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne. WADA had reportedly been pushing for at least a one-year suspension, but the case was not considered traditional doping.

At the same time, WADA was wary of the risk of an acquittal, especially given its recent controversies. The agreed-upon ban conveniently allows Sinner to return just in time for the Rome Masters 1000, avoiding any missed Grand Slam tournaments—a detail that has raised eyebrows across the tennis world.

Wawrinka Speaks Out Again

Among the most vocal critics is Stan Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, who previously expressed his frustration on social media, stating that he no longer believed in clean sport.

Currently competing in a Challenger event in Naples, Wawrinka addressed the issue again in an interview with Il Corriere dello Sport:

“So many negative things have happened in men’s and women’s tennis in recent years, and the image of our sport has been damaged. I hope the situation improves in the future.”

Regarding his tweet about Sinner, Wawrinka added:

“The world No. 1s in both men’s and women’s tennis have performed well in the past year. Yet, we only learned about this case months later, with a total lack of transparency.
No one is happy that the world No. 1 is unable to compete, but we demand more transparency in future proceedings.”

Wawrinka and Sinner previously had a strong relationship, but these surprising statements suggest growing tensions within the tennis community. The lack of clarity surrounding Sinner’s ban has left many questioning the sport’s integrity and the fairness of its anti-doping policies.
