The 2025 Madrid Open was abruptly paused on Monday after a widespread power outage in Spain, forcing all scheduled ATP and WTA matches to be canceled for the day. The tournament is set to resume Tuesday with both the ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 events continuing.

While the outage disrupted play, several players turned to humor on social media to lighten the mood — among them were Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur.

“Have they tried unplugging and plugging it back in?”

Meanwhile, Australian Alex de Minaur, scheduled to face Denis Shapovalov in the third round, added:

“Don’t mind this off-the-grid thing. On the 3rd walk-off today and finally got some service to check on the rest of the world.”

Katie Boulter Adds Some Sass

De Minaur’s fiancée and fellow tennis pro Katie Boulter had her own witty response, teasing:

“Imagine blaming a country blackout for not texting me back all day. Elite 🚩 behaviour.”

Gauff and Stearns Join In

It wasn’t just the men’s side having fun. Coco Gauff, ranked No. 4 in the world and set to face Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-finals, chimed in:

“🤣🤣 Put this in the history books — in all seriousness I hope everyone stays safe 🙏🏾.”

Fellow American Peyton Stearns, who will take on Aryna Sabalenka in her next match, posted:

“I didn’t mean this literally…”
in response to a previous tweet of hers that read:
“What’s done in the dark comes to the light.”

Play Set to Resume

Despite the interruption, play is expected to resume on Tuesday. Fritz will take on Casper Ruud, and Stearns looks to avenge her previous close loss to Sabalenka at Indian Wells 2024.
