Taylor Fritz cautious after abdominal injury despite Miami Open win: “We’re gonna have to wait and see”
Taylor Fritz Battles Through Injury, Advances to Miami Open Third Round
Taylor Fritz made a strong start to his Miami Open campaign, securing a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego to reach the Round of 32. However, the world No. 4 remains cautious about his abdominal injury, which has plagued him for months.
Injury Struggles and Recovery Journey
Fritz first revealed his abdominal issues in February when he was forced to withdraw from the Acapulco Open. The injury had already been bothering him before the Dallas Open, yet he continued competing despite the discomfort.
Heading into Indian Wells, he acknowledged that his recovery was still a work in progress. He managed back-to-back wins against Matteo Gigante and 30th seed Alejandro Tabilo but fell in the fourth round to Jack Draper, who eventually went on to win the tournament.
After his Miami Open victory over Sonego, Fritz provided an update on his condition, explaining that he and his team are still monitoring his progress throughout the week.
“A lot better… a lot better. I think we’re gonna have to wait and see. I think the conditions I’m playing in are gonna dictate it. For now, I feel good, but definitely gonna have to see.”
Next Challenge: Denis Shapovalov
Fritz now prepares for a third-round showdown against Denis Shapovalov, the 27th seed from Canada, on Monday. The two have faced off ten times, with Shapovalov leading their head-to-head 6-4. Their most recent meeting at this year’s Dallas Open saw Shapovalov claim a comeback win (2-6, 6-3, 7-6(2)).
With momentum on his side but his injury still a concern, Fritz will need to be at his best to overcome Shapovalov and continue his Miami Open run.
