Taylor Fritz now has an achievement which only Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz can match in 2024
Taylor Fritz has capped off a stellar year with a run to the title match at the ATP Finals in Turin.
The American bruised past Alexander Zverev for the fourth time this year, after wins at Wimbledon, the US Opens and the Laver Cup.
Taylor Fritz managed to stem a run of eight wins from the German, who was so far both unbeaten since the start of the Paris Masters. Zverev was also yet to be broken on serve at the ATP Finals – a mark of dominance Fritz promptly overcame.
Having already bruised past Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, and Andrey Rublev, Zverev forced a decider with a disciplined second set showing to level things up.
In a tie that seemed condemned to a tense, decisive tie-break, Fritz held firm, confidently whipping a forehand past Zverev to take the match 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (3).
In doing so, Fritz became the first American since 2006 to reach the final, and will break Pete Sampras’ 25-year record if he can lift the title against Sinner.
However, there is another milestone he reached after totting up another classy win over the world number two in Saturday’s semi-final.
Taylor Fritz reaches ATP milestone alongside Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz
Fritz had a standout year in 2024, muscling through his string of cursed quarter-final defeats at Grand Slams.
At Wimbledon, he reached his first semi-final, before going on to make a career milestone by advancing to his first US Open final.
In a year defined mostly by the two rising stars, Jannik Sinner and Alcaraz, Fritz has placed his name among the greats having notched up 10 wins over opponents inside the top 10 this year.
The Italian leads the charge with an impressive 15 victories over top 10 players, while Alcaraz follows closely behind with 12, continuing to build on his incredible rise.
Meanwhile, Fritz has firmly established himself in this elite group, securing 10 wins against the Top 10, increasingly at crucial moments in competitions.
Who has Taylor Fritz beaten in the top 10 this year?
The American’s three wins so far in Turin have tipped the balance this year, meaning he will likely end the year with more top 10 wins than losses this year.
With Zverev handing Fritz four of the ten so far, the American has also done well over a whole manner of opponents.
