Tennis fans are all saying the same thing after Novak Djokovic appoints Andy Murray as his new coach
Andy Murray is set to coach his former rival Novak Djokovic at the 2025 Australian Open.
After enjoying his first trophy-less season on the ATP Tour in 19 years, Djokovic has announced a huge change to his coaching setup ahead of the 2025 season.
Andy Murray will join Novak Djokovic for the Australian Open, as the Serb bids to win a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title.
Murray retired earlier this year at the Paris Olympic Games, having won three Grand Slam titles during his time as a professional.
The man who he will now be coaching, Djokovic won the gold medal in Paris, the highlight of a tough season.
A tough season that ended prematurely, as Djokovic withdrew from the ATP Finals despite qualifying for the year-end tournament in Turin.
They will be looking to make a splash in Melbourne, but they may already have done so, with fans overjoyed with excitement after the news broke earlier on Saturday.
Tennis fans are ‘excited’ as Andy Murray joins Novak Djokovic’s coaching team
Following Saturday’s breaking news of Djokovic and Murray’s new partnership, fans stormed to X, to share their thoughts.
“Tennis just got exciting for the 2025 season,” one fan said.
“Always wanted [Andy] Murray to win the Australian Open (lost five finals to Djokovic).
“Would be poetic justice to get one as a coach.”
Another fan was surprised by the news.
“Well that’s a shocker, but hey Andy’s back involved in tennis already, I like it,” they said.
One fan couldn’t believe the news.
“Murray is coaching Djokovic now?” they asked.
They weren’t the only one to be skeptical of the announcement.
“Didn’t realize it was April 1st today,” one fan joked.
Some fans saw the announcement as a cue to crown the Serb with his 25th Major title before the tournament has even begun.
“I am pretty sure that Djokovic will win the 2025 Australian Open,” one said.
“Andy literally destroyed his hip to get to the top through sheer willpower and desire to compete with you, Roger [Federer], and Rafa [Nadal],” said another.
“His will to win means that he will never let you drop your standards.
“Looking forward to you winning your 11th Australian Open.”
Not everyone is convinced however, as one tennis fan took to X to question how the dynamic between the pair would play out.
“I don’t know what to make of Djokovic’s move this morning,” they said.
“It’s undoubtedly great for tennis and as fans we all love it, but will it work?
“How easy will it be to listen to a guy that you dominated for most of your career?
“Can’t wait to see what happens.”
Did Novak Djokovic dominate Andy Murray during their careers?
With some fans questioning the dynamic between the pair, what was it like when they shared the court?
Murray and Djokovic faced off 36 times on the ATP Tour, with the Serbian 37-year-old leading the head-to-head 25-11.
Ironically as one fan mentioned, four of those defeats came in Australian Open finals, with Djokovic preventing Murray from winning in Melbourne in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2016.
That’s not to say that Murray didn’t score some big wins over his rival however, as he took down Djokovic to win two of his three Grand Slam titles.
Murray’s maiden Major triumph at the 2012 US Open came against the Serb, as he won a five-set thriller on Arthur Ashe.
He doubled his tally a year later, as Murray beat Djokovic to become the first British male winner of Wimbledon in 76 years.
The pair won’t have to worry about getting the better of one another anymore, however, as they look to join forces to win further Major titles as a team.
Murray and Djokovic will have their first crack at Grand Slam success at the 2025 Australian Open, which begins on January 12.
