Novak Djokovic has broken his great rival Rafael Nadal’s record for the most weeks ranked in the top two of the ATP Rankings.
The 37-year-old tennis icon also holds the records for the most weeks as world No 1 (428) and the most weeks spent in the top three of the rankings (754).
Djokovic and Nadal’s ability to maintain their status as one the two best players in the world for so long highlights their remarkable consistency and longevity.
There are seven players with over 300 weeks ranked in the top two of the ATP Rankings and three men who have passed the 500 milestone.
Here, we look at the seven players who have spent the most weeks ranked in the top two of the ATP Rankings since the system was introduced in 1973.
7. John McEnroe – 309 weeks
John McEnroe occupied a place in the top two of the rankings for 309 weeks of his career, with 170 weeks in top spot and 139 weeks as the world No 2.

Pete Sampras spent 376 weeks ranked in the top two of the ATP Rankings, having been the world No 1 for 286 weeks and the second-ranked player for 90 weeks.

Ivan Lendl amassed a total of 376 weeks ranked in the world’s top two, with 270 weeks in top spot and 106 weeks as the world No 2.
4. Jimmy Connors – 387 weeks
Jimmy Connors was a top two player in the ATP Rankings for 387 weeks of his career, with 268 of these weeks coming as world No 1 and 119 as the No 2.
3. Roger Federer – 528 weeks
Roger Federer was ranked in the top two in the world for a total of 528 weeks, 310 of which he spent in top spot, while he was the world No 2 for 218 weeks.
2. Rafael Nadal – 596 weeks
Nadal has spent 596 weeks ranked in the top two of the ATP Rankings, with 209 weeks as world No 1 and a record 387 weeks in second position.
1. Novak Djokovic – 599 weeks
Djokovic has entered his 597th week in the top two of the ATP Rankings and will reach 599 weeks as he is guaranteed to remain the world No 2 until at least after the 2024 US Open. Of these 599 weeks, 171 will have been as the world No 2.
