Yesterday, the tennis competitions at the 2024 Paris Olympics began. Today, the sixth-ranked ATP player Alex De Minaur was scheduled to compete in the singles match against the world number 34, Jan-Lennard Struff.
However, just a few hours before the match, it was announced that the Australian had withdrawn from the singles competition. The reason for his withdrawal was an injury sustained during Wimbledon.
The Australian Olympic Committee stated that De Minaur had not fully recovered from his injury and prioritized participating in the doubles competition.
“He will prioritize the men’s doubles tournament, where he will play alongside his childhood friend Alexei Popyrin,” the Australian Olympic Committee announced.
It should be noted that De Minaur also withdrew from Wimbledon due to the same injury, preventing him from playing his quarterfinal match against Novak Djokovic.
Alex De Minaur was the fifth seed in the men’s singles competition. Due to his withdrawal, Struff advances to the second round, where he will face the winner of the match between Frenchman Corentin Moutet (ATP: 68) and Indian Sumit Nagal (ATP: 80).
De Minaur will participate in the doubles competition, where he and Alexei Popyrin will face the American duo of Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram.
