Van Gerwen loses more than 20 kilos ahead of PDC World Darts Championship: “Don’t have a six-pack either, I’m no Brad Pitt”
Michael van Gerwen has revealed a significant personal transformation as he heads into the 2026 PDC World Darts Championship, admitting he has shed over 20 kilograms as part of a lifestyle overhaul this season.
The three-time world champion — known as much for his firepower on the oche as his intense training ethic — says the weight loss is part of a commitment to feel fitter and stronger as he chases more major titles at Alexandra Palace.
Van Gerwen, 35, downplayed any suggestion he has become a fitness fanatic, joking that while he’s lost a notable amount of weight, he’s not chasing Hollywood looks.
“I don’t have a six-pack either,” he laughed. “I’m no Brad Pitt — I just wanted to feel better, play better and stay healthy.”
The Dutchman has long spoken about the importance of physical conditioning for maintaining precision, stamina and focus during long matches and gruelling tournament weeks. But this most recent weight drop appears to be the most dramatic improvement he’s made in recent years.
Van Gerwen’s focus on fitness comes at a pivotal time in his career. After a mixed 2025, the three-time world champion has made changes off the oche to sharpen his edge — and the results, he says, are already noticeable.
“I feel quicker on my feet, stronger in my legs, and mentally sharper,” he added. “When you feel good physically, it helps you concentrate better out there.”
Despite the fresh look and new mindset, Van Gerwen insisted he hasn’t lost his trademark swagger — or his appetite for competition.
“I still want to win everything,” he said. “World Championship, Premier League, all of it. But I want to be healthier while doing it.”
Van Gerwen will begin his run at the 2026 World Darts Championship later this week, with many fans and pundits eager to see how the revamped version of the Dutch star fares against darts’ next generation of challengers.
Whichever way the tournament unfolds, one thing is clear: Van Gerwen is entering Ally Palace in better shape than he’s been for some time — and ready to take on anyone who stands between him and another shot at darting glory.
