Nathan Aspinall provided one of the most dramatic moments of the darts season in Edinburgh after collapsing to the stage floor in disbelief when he agonisingly wired a nine-darter attempt. The electrifying moment came during his clash at the latest tour event, with the crowd erupting as “The Asp” came within millimetres of perfection.
Aspinall had already hit six flawless darts, followed by a textbook 180 to set up the magical 141 finish. After nailing the treble 20 and treble 19, he paused, drew a deep breath, and aimed for the double 12 that would have sealed the perfect leg. The dart clipped the wire—so close it appeared in for a split second—before bouncing away.
Realising just how near he had come, Aspinall fell backwards onto the stage, arms spread, laughing and groaning at the same time as the Edinburgh crowd roared in appreciation. The moment quickly made its way across social media, with fans calling it “the most Nathan Aspinall reaction ever.”
Despite the miss, the former UK Open champion recovered well, regaining composure and going on to win the leg. His opponent also joined in with a smile, acknowledging just how cruel the sport can be—even for its top professionals.
Aspinall later joked in his post-match interview that the miss would “haunt his dreams,” but he admitted he was proud of the overall performance and delighted to have delivered such entertainment for the crowd.
The near nine-darter adds to Aspinall’s growing list of dramatic stage moments, further cementing his reputation as one of darts’ great entertainers—both for his fearless play and his unmistakable personality.
