Luke Littler Becomes Youngest World Darts Champion at 17: “I Just Can’t Believe It”
Seventeen-year-old Luke Littler has etched his name into sports history, becoming the youngest-ever winner of the PDC World Darts Championship after defeating legend Michael van Gerwen 7-3 in a stunning final on Friday night.
Littler, who rose to viral fame during his breakout run in last year’s championship, was overwhelmed with emotion as he secured the title, breaking down in tears moments after his winning throw. “I can’t believe it, honestly,” he told Sky Sports. “I just can’t believe it.”
Littler’s win wasn’t just a personal milestone — it was a generational shift in the world of darts. At just 17, he shattered the previous record set by van Gerwen, who claimed his first world title at 24. “Every 17 years, a star is born — and he’s one of them,” van Gerwen said, acknowledging the symbolic passing of the torch.
The young Englishman had already made waves in 2024 when, at just 16, he reached the world final as an unranked underdog. Known for his relaxed demeanor and love of pizza and video games, Littler’s charm captured hearts around the globe. Though he fell short that year to World No. 1 Luke Humphries, the loss fueled a breakout season.
Since turning pro shortly after the 2024 final, Littler has amassed 10 titles and earned around $1.4 million in prize money. His latest triumph now places him second in the world rankings behind Humphries.
“I learned a lot last year,” Littler said. “To come back and win it this year — that means everything.” Asked what comes next, the teen phenom smiled: “I could end 2025 winning absolutely nothing else and I’d be satisfied. I’ve picked the big one up.”
The darts world has a new superstar — and he’s only just getting started.
