“We Want Total Transparency” – Stan Wawrinka Weighs in on Jannik Sinner Doping Controversy

The tennis world remains divided over the doping case involving World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, and Stan Wawrinka has now shared his perspective on how the situation was handled.

Sinner tested positive for clostebol, a banned substance, at Indian Wells last year. Following a lengthy review, the Italian was handed a three-month suspension from February to May 2025. While this means he will miss several ATP Masters events, many fans and fellow players feel his punishment was too lenient, citing his superstar status as a possible factor.

Wawrinka Calls for Greater Transparency

The three-time Grand Slam champion has long been an advocate for greater transparency in tennis. Speaking ahead of an ATP Challenger event in Naples, Italy, Wawrinka stressed the need for improved communication in doping cases.

“It’s a difficult topic, not easy to explain everything in detail,” Wawrinka said during a press conference. “There have been several incidents in both men’s and women’s tennis in recent years, and it hasn’t reflected well on our sport. I hope things improve.”

The Swiss star pointed out that two World No. 1 players have tested positive in the past year, yet the information only became public months later.

“What we ask for is total transparency. I hope tennis moves forward in a different way. In the end, we just want great matches. No one wants to see players removed from the sport—especially not the World No. 1—but we need transparency. That’s what truly matters.”
