Ilkay Gundogan’s future at Barcelona has certainly emerged as an interesting topic of discussion.
Fabrizio Romano reported on Monday that Gundogan could leave Barcelona this summer.
Romano added that the Catalan giants are ready to let him leave the club.
Considering Gundogan signed for Barcelona in the summer of 2023, it is surprise to discover that there remains a distinct possibility that his time at Spain could come to such an early end.
The former Manchester City midfielder was expected to at least spend a few more years at the Spotify Camp Nou — considering he signed for the club off the back of one of the best seasons of his career.
Romano: Guardiola is keen on Gundogan return to Man City
At Barcelona as well, the 33-year-old has been a class act — performing as a number eight, as a holding midfielder and even as a number 10.
It seemed like having worked under Hansi Flick for the German national team, Gundogan would enjoy the 2024/2025 season at the club.
A fresh revelation has emerged about the veteran’s future in Spain.
Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Pep Guardiola and Manchester City are “open” to the prospect of the German returning to the club.
Romano has also added that City have contacted Gundogan’s representatives in an effort to make his return to the Etihad Stadium a possibility.
The midfield maestro is believed to have received offers from clubs in Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar as well.
Understandable why Pep Guardiola would fancy Ilkay Gundogan reunion
It comes as no surprise to discover that Pep Guardiola is keen on Gundogan returning to Manchester City.
Despite City emerging as Premier League champions last summer, they struggled to replace Gundogan; a midfielder who was world-class across all phases of the pitch; traits that cannot be associated with Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes, who are at their very best as central midfielders.
The former Borussia Dortmund technician’s return would allow the £378,846-a-week man not to worry as much previously when Rodri is either injured or rested due to his experience in the holding midfield role.
Furthermore, the return of one of City’s greatest-ever captains would be a massive boost for the dressing room.
Gundogan’s know-how of Guardiola’s style of play, how to win trophies and his teammates would make the Premier League winners an even stronger force to contend with.
