Why Andy Murray can’t name a new partner after Emma Raducanu withdrawal at Wimbledon
Andy Murray’s Wimbledon career has been brought to an end after Emma Raducanu pulled out of the pair’s mixed doubles campaign but fans have asked why he could not find a new partner
Wimbledon rules prevent Andy Murray from picking a new doubles’ partner after Emma Raducanu ’s withdrawal.
The 21-year-old shared the news on Saturday, effectively bringing the two-time men’s singles champion’s Wimbledon career to an end. He had previously played doubles with his brother Jamie but suffered a first-round exit.
A statement from Raducanu read: “Unfortunately I woke up with some stiffness in my right wrist this morning, so I have taken the very tough decision to withdraw from the mixed doubles. I’m disappointed as I was really looking forward to playing with Andy, but I’ve got to take care.”
Murray is now left without a partner, but will not be allowed to name someone else. Their match with Marcelo Arévalo and Zhang Shuai was set to take place today, meaning it is too short notice to name a replacement. They were due to start at 5pm on Court One. Raducanu had previously slammed the timing as ‘not ideal’.

Despite her wrist issue, Raducanu is still scheduled to play Lulu Sun in the women’s singles fourth round on Sunday. Murray’s mum Judy has also given her response to the news.
Tennis presenter Marcus Buckland wrote on social media: “Astonishing news that Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from her mixed doubles match with Andy Murray. She’s citing soreness in her right wrist.
“It means Murray has played his last match at Wimbledon. Oh dear!” Judy Murray then replied: “Yes, astonishing.” With Murray unable to name a replacement, he now looks to have played his final Wimbledon game.
