Why is Luke Littler not playing European Darts Trophy this weekend as World Champion plans ‘another chilled week off’
Luke Littler Opts for Extended Break Ahead of Newcastle Premier League Clash
Luke Littler is making the most of a carefully managed schedule, ensuring he stays fresh for the crucial months ahead. With no ProTour events last week and opting out of this weekend’s European Darts Trophy, the Premier League leader is taking an extended break—his second consecutive week without competitive darts.
Despite being a notable absentee from the European Tour, Littler is doubling down on his approach by completely stepping away from practice, choosing not to pick up a dart until the Premier League resumes in Newcastle next week.
Smart Scheduling Amid a Packed Calendar
Littler’s scheduling strategy could prove to be a shrewd decision, considering the relentless run of ProTours and European Tours in the coming months. With major events in Berlin and Rotterdam still on the horizon, the young star is prioritizing rest to avoid burnout amid constant travel demands.
His unconventional approach has certainly paid off so far—despite not practicing ahead of Cardiff, Littler still delivered a stunning performance, hitting a nine-dart finish and defeating Michael van Gerwen in the final.
“I can’t see many players in the Premier League practicing at home,” Littler admitted after extending his lead to six points at the top of the table.
“I think everyone from the Prem is going to the Euro Tour this weekend, which I’ve pulled out of. I chose not to go, and it’s just another chilled week off. I’ll have another week off and chill, and see how the darts fly in Newcastle.”
Race for the Top Spot Still Open
Despite his dominance, Littler remains cautious about the battle for the top of the Premier League standings. He refuses to rule out Luke Humphries, who still has plenty of time to close the gap.
“I wouldn’t say the tide has turned because there’s still nine weeks left,” Littler explained.
“Luke is still capable of winning nights, so I’ve got to try and add on to it.”
With just two matches in a fortnight, Littler’s calculated rest period could set him up for a strong finish to the season as he eyes the Premier League title and a potential playoff spot in May.
