The darts world is buzzing this weekend as the European Darts Trophy takes place in Göttingen, Germany — but one of the sport’s biggest names is notably missing. Reigning world champion and current world No.1 Luke Littler is not part of the field, leaving many fans wondering why the teenage superstar has opted to skip the event.
Littler, nicknamed “The Nuke,” has enjoyed a sensational run throughout 2026. The 19-year-old has already captured several major titles this season, including the PDC World Darts Championship, the World Masters and the UK Open. He also secured a victory on the Premier League Darts circuit, lifted the Poland Darts Open and triumphed at the Saudi Arabia Darts Masters.
His win in Poland was particularly impressive, as Littler defeated Gian van Veen 8–4 in the final while averaging over 105 for the tournament — another demonstration of the form that has turned him into one of the sport’s biggest attractions.
Despite that momentum, Littler decided to sit out this week’s European Tour stop at the Lokhalle in Göttingen. The move appears to be part of a wider approach he has taken with his schedule, often limiting his appearances on the ProTour to manage the heavy demands of professional darts.
One reason is the packed calendar. Littler is currently involved in the weekly Premier League, which requires players to compete every Thursday night across the UK and Europe. Balancing that competition with additional tournaments can quickly become exhausting.
Another factor may be the atmosphere he has previously encountered at events in Germany. Littler has spoken in the past about receiving hostile receptions from sections of German crowds, which has influenced his willingness to play certain tournaments in the country. Last year he even withdrew from the European Darts Grand Prix amid similar circumstances.
There are no reports of injury behind his decision — it appears to be purely strategic. Littler has openly discussed the importance of managing his workload to stay at the top level and avoid burnout during such an intense schedule.
He is not the only big name missing from the tournament either. Players such as Luke Humphries, Jonny Clayton, Nathan Aspinall, Gary Anderson and James Wade are also absent from the field.
Their absence has created an opportunity for other stars — including Michael van Gerwen and Gerwyn Price — as well as emerging talents to make their mark in Göttingen. Early matches have already produced high averages and surprise results, proving the tournament remains fiercely competitive.
For Littler fans, however, the wait to see him back in action will not be long. The teenager remains a central figure in the Premier League and is expected to feature again soon at upcoming European Tour events.
At just 19, the Warrington prodigy continues to manage his career with impressive maturity — balancing a relentless schedule while protecting his long-term performance. While Göttingen misses out on “The Nuke” this weekend, darts supporters know that when Littler returns to the oche, fireworks are rarely far behind. 🎯
