The world No.4 has not won a match in the competition since finishing runner-up on Night Two in Antwerp.

Van Gerwen suffered a heavy 6–1 defeat to Luke Humphries in Cardiff on Night Five, with his scoring struggles once again on display.

Mardle believes the Dutch star is currently struggling to find his rhythm on the big stage and even raised concerns about his throwing action.

He said: “I said before a dart was thrown that I think Michael van Gerwen is out of sorts.

“Since winning and finishing runner-up earlier in the competition, he’s had a bit of a torturous time. He wasn’t well the week before last.

“He looked really edgy last week, and he’s been edgy again this week. The darts just aren’t coming out of the hand right.

“They’re landing at different angles and he’s not grouping them well. That’s worrying times for him. I just thought Luke Humphries was too good for him tonight.”

Van Gerwen currently sits fifth in the table, just one point outside the play-off places.

He will return to action in the fourth round of the UK Open Darts Championship on Friday evening.
