Darts legend Phil Taylor has issued a stark warning to Luke Littler, insisting the teenage superstar will face an intense wave of jealousy, scrutiny, and negativity now that he has climbed to World Number One. Taylor, who experienced similar treatment during his own era of dominance, says Littler should prepare for a side of fame few young athletes are truly ready for.
Speaking candidly, the 16-time world champion explained that the top ranking comes with far more than prestige—it brings resentment from rivals, criticism from fans, and a constant spotlight on every performance. “When you’re number one, people don’t always like it,” Taylor said. “You get disliked for it. There’s lots of jealousy.”
According to Taylor, Littler’s rapid rise—becoming the sport’s biggest attraction before even turning 19—will only intensify the negativity from certain corners of the darts world. He believes some players will struggle to accept how quickly the teenager has surpassed them, while sections of the public may resent his success simply because it has come so early and so easily.
“Some will celebrate him, but others will look at him and think, ‘Why him? Why so soon?’ That’s just how it is,” Taylor noted. “People love you when you’re chasing, but when you reach the top, the jealousy comes out.”
Taylor knows this pressure well. Throughout his own dominant reign, he frequently found himself a target—booed by crowds, criticised by rivals, and accused of turning darts into a one-man show. He believes Littler will face a similar journey, especially with his massive fanbase, growing media attention, and his ability to overshadow even the sport’s most established stars.
Despite the warning, Taylor insisted Littler has the temperament to handle it. “He’s a strong lad. He doesn’t seem bothered by noise around him,” he said. “If he keeps his head down, keeps working, and ignores the jealous ones, he’ll be just fine.”
The darts legend also urged Littler to embrace the pressure instead of fearing it. “Being number one is the best feeling in the world—you just have to learn to deal with the rest. The reactions, the comments, the jealousy… it’s all part of the job.”
