“You Ruined Simona’s Career”- Fans aggressively attack ITIA for unfair treatment in Simona Halep – Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek Doping Case
Simona Halep’s journey in tennis came to an emotional conclusion after her retirement announcement in February 2024. The former World No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion had a career marked by tremendous success but also faced significant challenges in recent years, including injuries and a doping scandal.
Halep’s doping case began in October 2022, when she tested positive for the banned substance roxadustat during the US Open, leading to a four-year suspension. The International Tennis Integrity Authority (ITIA) also investigated inconsistencies in her biological passport. While Halep denied any wrongdoing and appealed the decision, the case remained controversial. After months of legal battles, the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled in March 2024 that her positive test was likely caused by a contaminated supplement. The ban was reduced to nine months, which she had already served, clearing her to return to competition.
However, Halep’s return was short-lived. After making her comeback at the Miami Open in March 2024 with a wild card invitation, she was defeated by Paula Badosa and later lost to Yuan Yue at the Hong Kong Tennis Open. On February 4, 2024, in her home country of Romania, she played her final professional match at the WTA 250 event in Cluj, where she was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Lucia Bronzetti. Following this loss, Halep officially announced her retirement.
Throughout the ordeal, Halep expressed frustration over what she perceived as a double standard in the handling of doping cases. She criticized the ITIA for announcing her case immediately while players like Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek were allowed to play during their appeals. She voiced her dissatisfaction on social media, questioning why there was such a discrepancy in treatment. “I asked to lift the provisional suspension to be able to play, but now they (Sinner and Swiatek) can play,” Halep noted.
Despite her struggles, Halep reflected on her decision to retire with a sense of peace. She explained how physical and emotional exhaustion had taken a toll on her, admitting that she could no longer push herself to compete at the top level. “I can’t push myself just to fight for a spot in the top 100,” she said, acknowledging that staying at the top required an immense amount of effort.
Halep also shared how her suspension and the challenges she faced reshaped her outlook on life. “Until my suspension, I didn’t believe in evil. That’s when I realized there’s a lot of it in the world. I’m at peace knowing I did nothing wrong,” she added, emphasizing her desire to remain “clean and calm.”
While Halep’s career ended under difficult circumstances, she will always be remembered as one of tennis’ greatest champions, known for her consistency, mental strength, and two Grand Slam victories—2018 French Open and 2019 Wimbledon.
