The Serbian champion, sensationally eliminated in the 3rd round, has indicated who – in his opinion – can win the New York Major
After yesterday’s defeat of Carlos Alcaraz, also Novak Djokovic exits the scene prematurely, at the US Open, surprisingly defeated by the Australian tennis player Alexei Popyrin, who has been clearly improving in recent months.
The Olympics have changed the schedule of the Serbian champion, who has focused all his energies on achieving that gold medal that he has chased so much in his career but, despite this – and in light of the Wimbledon final and the elimination of Carlitos – Nole had a truly unique chance to win his 25th Major.
However, the Serb has never seemed in condition and far – physically and mentally – from the champion we admired at the Paris Olympics. The 24-time Slam champion collapsed in the first two sets, tried to react but finally gave in and, after an immeasurable amount of time, exited in the first week of a Grand Slam tournament.
In the post-match press conference, Nole analyzed the defeat, praised his opponent and talked about the rest of the tournament, indicating who is his favorite for the final victory.
“Popyrin beat me deservedly, if he serves like he did and plays well he can beat anyone. Alcaraz is out, so far it has been a tournament with big surprises. At the moment Jannik Sinner is the favorite, but there are also Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz who are playing well and can surprise, then also Andrey Rublev and Grigor Dimitrov,” analyzed the Serbian champion.
Curiously, Nole did not mention Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev, the two tennis players who, due to their ranking and results, are the big favorites together with the Italian tennis player. In any case, Jannik is working hard in view of today’s match, where he will face O’Connell. The Italian has a draw that has opened up but that will probably see him opposed in the Quarterfinals against Daniil Medvedev, without forgetting the possible clash in the Round of 16 against the American Tommy Paul.
In short, a draw that is anything but simple for Sinner, for whom it will not be easy to obtain the final victory. The dream of the second Slam is there but we are still at the beginning and the fight is more heated than ever. It must also be said that Djokovic finished the season without winning a Slam, something that hasn’t happened in years.
