Luke Humphries has admitted he will be “rooting” for Luke Littler to complete a historic clean sweep of the major darts titles if he cannot win one himself.
The world No.2 produced an impressive performance to defeat Jermaine Wattimena 6-4 in the opening round of the World Series Finals in Amsterdam.
Humphries, 31, averaged 98.43 and produced a brilliant 132 checkout to book his place in the last 16.
However, the former world champion has endured a difficult run in major finals over the past 12 months, losing his last five. Four of those defeats came against Littler, while Gian van Veen claimed the other victory.
Despite his desire to win silverware himself, Humphries says he would support Littler’s bid for history if he is knocked out early.
“To be honest, I don’t want to be the one to stop him from doing it. I don’t want him to achieve it because I want to win a major,” Humphries said.
“If he does the clean sweep, that means I don’t win anything, which from a personal point of view I don’t want to happen.
“But if I lose early, then I want him to win. If I don’t win a major, I want to see him do it because it would be the most incredible thing I have ever seen in my lifetime.
“If I am losing in the semi-finals, quarter-finals or first round of majors, then I am rooting for him to do it because it would be quite some achievement.
“I am hoping to stop him because I want to win one. That is the most important thing for me.”
Humphries also has his own piece of history in mind, with the World Series Finals among the major titles still missing from his collection.
“This is one of the three that I have never won — the European Championship, UK Open and this one,” he added.
“There is another event next year as we all know, so there are going to be four now. I’ve still got a lot of majors to tick off and win.
“This is a really tough one because you are playing tough players all the time. This is one I definitely want to tick off.
“If I can do it this year, that would be amazing because obviously I could do the European Championship this year and go into the UK Open next year and tick them all off.
“If that was my lifelong dream, it would be to tick off every major that is on the calendar.”
