The US Open has already seen several high-profile casualties as it enters the final day of the first week. The trophy will have a new name this year after defending champion Novak Djokovic was dumped out in the third round during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Djokovic’s defeat by the hugely impressive Alexei Popyrin followed Carlos Alcaraz’s dismal second-round loss to Botic van de Zandschulp. Both players seemed tired of a long summer which including gruelling campaigns at Wimbledon and the Olympics.

Rublev calls physio after ’embarrassing’ meltdown

Andrey Rublev’s emotions got the better of him during his fourth-round clash with Grigor Dimitrov.

After blowing break-back points in the first set, he struck his ankle with his racket and slapped his racket strings. The Russian then called the physio to treat his self-inflicted injury.

On commentary Sky Sports, Annabel Croft slammed his behaviour.

“I mean it’s embarrassing, isn’t it? That he does this to himself. And it’s happened so many times before. Normally, as I said, it’s the knuckles that he’ll be punching the strings with but I mean, that was quite a few heavy blows,” she said.
