Lee Carsley’s announcement of the final squad during his tenure as England’s interim manager came as little surprise, with star players like Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Bukayo Saka featuring prominently. Lille’s Angel Gomes continues to vie for a central midfield role, while the usual absentees due to injuries have predictably been left out.

However, the inclusion of Jack Grealish certainly raised some eyebrows among fans and pundits alike. The winger had been in stellar form under Carsley, netting two goals in three appearances for the temporary boss—equaling the tally he managed in his previous 36 appearances under Gareth Southgate.

That said, the big question mark hanging over Grealish’s selection was his fitness, which has been a significant concern as the international break approached. He featured off the bench for City in their first match post-October’s international fixtures, witnessing John Stones’ dramatic stoppage-time winner against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Nevertheless, Grealish soon faced a setback when he picked up a groin injury, ruling him out of City’s record-breaking victory over Sparta Prague in the Champions League just three days later. Initially, Pep Guardiola expressed optimism regarding Grealish’s recovery, hinting on October 23 that he could be sidelined for “maybe one week, ten days.” This optimism, however, quickly faded as Grealish’s muscular issue worsened.

Despite Guardiola leaving Grealish out of the tight Premier League win against Southampton and the subsequent Carabao Cup defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, the City manager lamented that there was “no chance to play the next games” for his talented forward.

As a result, Grealish was unavailable for City’s losses to both Bournemouth and Sporting CP, which saw him miss five games in total over the past three weeks, with neither Guardiola nor any Manchester City official providing a clear return date.

Carsley did express cautious optimism regarding Grealish’s readiness for the upcoming international fixtures, stating, “We are fully in contact with the medical staff and we expect Jack to be fit.” The 50-year-old manager detailed that Grealish had participated in training in recent days, and they would conduct an assessment to ensure he was prepared for action.

“He’s an important player not just for this camp but for the future,” Carsley added. “He’s a joy to coach and his contagious character lifts the mood in the dressing room, on and off the field. His love for representing England is palpable, and he is a player we are keen to support as long as possible.”

If deemed fit, Grealish could impress in England’s forthcoming fixtures against Greece and the Republic of Ireland, and may even feature for City in their upcoming Premier League clash against Brighton on Saturday.
