Jannik Sinner makes his feelings known on Carlos Alcaraz’s Career Grand Slam pursuit at Australian Open
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz had a standout 2024, each claiming two Grand Slam titles. Sinner triumphed at the Australian Open and the US Open, while Alcaraz clinched Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Both players are eager to capture as many Grand Slams as possible this year, with Alcaraz particularly motivated by one specific goal: winning the Australian Open.
Although Alcaraz has won every Grand Slam except the Australian Open, a victory here would complete his career Grand Slam and make him the youngest ever to achieve that feat. Sinner, aware of the significance of this milestone, acknowledges Alcaraz’s extra drive to succeed.
“Yeah, I understand him. I know him. I know what’s missing for him, the career Grand Slam. Many others want it too, so let’s see. Two weeks are long, and I’ll always try to stay positive in tough moments. We’ll see how it goes,” Sinner said.
Sinner, who dominated last year’s Australian Open, is no stranger to the pursuit of a Career Grand Slam. His win in Melbourne last year was largely unchallenged, despite losing two sets in the final against Daniil Medvedev. Sinner’s strength was evident throughout the tournament, and he remains one of the players vying for the ultimate tennis achievement.
The rivalry between Alcaraz and Sinner is one that fans and players alike are watching closely. Alcaraz, who narrowly defeated Sinner in the Roland Garros semifinals last year before winning the final against Alexander Zverev, spoke highly of their competition: “Every time I face him, it pushes me to practice harder. Seeing him win titles and rise in the rankings motivates me to give my best.”
Sinner, too, reflected on their rivalry in an October 2024 interview: “We’re two very different players. I keep the pace high, and I’m mentally strong. He’s physically stronger and has a bit more variety in his game—he plays the slice and volleys better. But that’s a positive for me, it means I still have room to improve.”
With both players at the top of their game, their rivalry promises to be a key feature of the tennis landscape in the years to come, with the next chapter likely unfolding at the 2025 Australian Open.
