Emma Raducanu: Broady Defends British Star Amid Struggles, Calls for Patience
Since her historic 2021 US Open triumph, Emma Raducanu has remained one of the most recognizable names in tennis. The British star skyrocketed to fame, becoming the face of British tennis. However, in recent years, she has faced challenges in finding consistent results.
Former British No. 2 Naomi Broady has now spoken out in support of Raducanu, addressing the criticism directed at her while offering advice on navigating her career.
Searching for Consistency
Raducanu’s fairytale Grand Slam victory in 2021 feels like a distant memory. Entering the US Open as a wildcard, she produced one of the most remarkable runs in tennis history, winning ten straight matches without dropping a set to claim the title. However, replicating that level has proven to be an uphill battle.
Heading into 2025, there were high expectations for her resurgence. However, she suffered a second-round exit at the Australian Open, followed by a first-round loss in Singapore. With her form under scrutiny, Raducanu now looks to regain momentum in the coming tournaments.
Amid her struggles, some critics have dismissed her US Open triumph as a fluke. Broady, however, strongly refuted this notion in an interview with Tennis365.
“People who say Emma got lucky when she won the US Open don’t understand tennis,” Broady stated.
“You hear them call her a ‘one-Slam wonder’ or claim it was a fluke. But if you understand the sport, you’ll know that’s simply not possible. You can’t come through qualifying, win seven main-draw matches without dropping a set, and lift a Grand Slam trophy by luck.”
Broady also acknowledged the mental challenges Raducanu faces, particularly in dealing with negativity and external pressure.
“She has the level, and she just needs to get back there. It’s incredibly difficult not to get caught up in the negativity online,” Broady added.
“Hopefully, her team will help her manage that, which may be why she has tightened her inner circle in recent years. She needs that protection around her.”
Coaching Uncertainty Raises Concerns
Raducanu is currently in search of a new coach following the departure of Nick Cavaday due to health reasons. Her frequent coaching changes have raised concerns about instability in her support team.
Broady weighed in on the situation, emphasizing the need for patience as Raducanu works towards rediscovering her best form.
“It’s difficult to define success for Emma right now, and I’m sure she and her team are figuring that out too,” Broady said.
“We know she has the level when she’s fully fit, and once she starts winning again, the belief will come back. She is putting in a lot of work off the court, and I love her hiring Yutaka Nakamura. He’s one of the best in tennis at what he does, and his guidance will help her manage her body better.”
Broady also drew comparisons between Raducanu and Jack Draper, another British player who has struggled with physical setbacks.
“We’ve seen with Jack Draper that once he managed his body properly, his results improved significantly. Emma has that potential too.”
A Long Road Ahead, But Hope Remains
While Raducanu’s journey has been far from smooth since her US Open triumph, Broady remains optimistic about her future. She stressed the importance of patience, stability, and a strong support system to help Raducanu reclaim her best form.
Raducanu has already proven she can compete with the world’s best, and as the 2025 season unfolds, all eyes will be on whether she can turn her fortunes around and silence her critics once again.
