There were high hopes for Nick Kyrgios’ return to the court after nearly two years away. The Australian star struggled with several injuries from the start of 2023 through to the beginning of this season, particularly to his elbow and knee, which put the rest of his career in serious jeopardy.
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist admitted that he was close to retiring and that he may never return to his best form, but he wants to give himself one final shot at achieving some significant results on the ATP tour.
So far, 2025 hasn’t started off great for Kyrgios. He was eliminated early at both the Brisbane International – where he also played doubles with his friend Novak Djokovic – and at the Australian Open, where he looked far from being in optimal shape.
Kyrgios acknowledged his current limitations and promised he would strive to be in better form for Wimbledon, the Grand Slam where his game has historically been most effective, and where he reached the final three years ago.
Kyrgios set to play in California
Recently, it was announced that Kyrgios will compete in the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, the first Masters 1000 event of the year, taking place in California from March 5 to 16.
The former world number 13 will be able to play thanks to a ‘protected ranking,’ unless he is granted a wild card by the tournament organizers.
Now ranked 1092 in the ATP, the Australian revealed that he likely won’t be playing singles in 2026 and hopes to close out his career on his own terms with some strong performances in 2025.
Kyrgios has had some success at Indian Wells, having reached the quarterfinals in both 2017 and 2022.
It’s clear that Kyrgios needs to regain solid physical form if he hopes to aim for ambitious goals. Otherwise, the latter part of his career could become a real struggle.
