Simona Halep Admits Retirement Is on Her Mind Amid Injury Struggles
Simona Halep has admitted that she is contemplating retirement despite being cleared to return to the WTA Tour.
The former world No. 1 saw her initial four-year doping suspension reduced to nine months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last March, allowing her to make an immediate comeback. However, her return to competition has been anything but smooth.
Struggles Since Returning to the Tour
Halep is currently competing in her home tournament in Cluj, marking just her fifth event since her suspension was lifted. The two-time Grand Slam champion entered both singles and doubles at this week’s Transylvania Open, her first tournament of 2025 and her first match appearance since October 2024.
However, the 33-year-old has faced persistent challenges, primarily a serious knee injury, which has slowed her comeback and now has her seriously considering stepping away from the sport.
“The knee injury I have is quite serious and difficult to recover from,” Halep told Golazo ahead of the WTA 250 event in Cluj.
“I don’t know if I’m afraid to push myself, but when I feel pain, it’s hard to play at my highest level. It’s very difficult to get back to where I was, especially after such a long break. The thought of retiring crosses my mind very often. I’ve reached an age where I have injuries that are hard to recover from.”
Uncertain Future and Life Beyond Tennis
Halep also revealed that she was advised to undergo knee surgery, but she is reluctant to go through with the procedure. Instead, she appears increasingly ready to move on from tennis.
“My knee won’t heal completely. I was advised to undergo surgery, but it’s a complicated procedure, and I don’t think I will go through with it. We’ll see what happens next. Life moves forward, and I’ll take things as they come. Tennis is not everything in life. I have many desires and goals beyond the sport.”
Reflecting on her career, Halep expressed gratitude for everything she has achieved, including becoming world No. 1 and winning two Grand Slam titles.
“Everything I have done has been extraordinary… I may not have even dreamed of becoming world No. 1 and winning two Grand Slam titles. I worked hard for it, and I feel fulfilled as a tennis player. Now, I want to do something else, not just tennis. The first part of my life was all about tennis; now, I want to explore other things.”
Focusing on the Present in Cluj
While retirement looms as a possibility, Halep remains focused on competing in front of her home crowd. She partnered with Ana Bogdan in the doubles event but was eliminated in the first round. In singles, she will face Lucia Bronzetti as she looks to secure her first WTA Tour-level victory since her return.
