Simona Halep Opens Up About Retirement: “It’s a Liberation” 🎾💔
After an illustrious career, Simona Halep has officially retired from professional tennis, marking the end of an era for Romanian and world tennis. Her decision came after her final match at the WTA 250 in Cluj-Napoca, where she confirmed what many had feared—her body could no longer endure the demands of the sport.
The Decision to Retire
“I couldn’t even train properly. My knee hurts, my shoulder hurts, and I’ve reached emotional exhaustion. I respect tennis too much to continue like this.”
Halep revealed that she required a cartilage implant in her knee, with a year-and-a-half recovery period and no guarantee of returning to her best level. That was the final confirmation that she needed to step away.
“I wanted to avoid surgery at all costs. Maybe in a year, I’ll miss all this and come back—many athletes are returning, so you never know.”
Reflecting on Her Career
Despite the difficult farewell, Halep has no regrets and takes pride in everything she achieved.
“I only keep the beautiful moments—the two Grand Slams, being World No. 1, and winning so many tournaments. Darren Cahill always tells me I am the best Romanian player in history, so I take that too.”
She acknowledged her former coach Darren Cahill as a key figure in her success, particularly in bridging the gap from being a top player to winning Grand Slams.
“To go from World No. 2 to winning a Grand Slam is a long way. And from No. 1 to winning a Slam, it’s even longer. Darren helped me take that final step.”
What’s Next for Halep?
Halep now embraces life beyond tennis, with a focus on self-discovery, family, and new passions.
“I don’t want responsibilities, plans, or strict schedules. My goal is to learn to play golf, go to the gym every day, and take care of my body. I also want to be a mother.”
On the Doping Scandal & Lessons Learned
Halep also addressed the doping suspension that overshadowed the final years of her career, admitting it changed her view of the world.
“Until then, I didn’t believe in evil. That incident showed me how much evil exists in the world. But I have no need for revenge—I am at peace knowing I did nothing wrong.”
