“Took me months to recover” – Stefanos Tsitsipas and Matteo Berrettini get real about ‘heartbreaking’ first breakups
Tsitsipas and Berrettini Reflect on First Heartbreaks During ATP Rotterdam
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Matteo Berrettini took part in the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam (February 1-9, 2025), where they not only competed but also engaged in a fun interaction video released by the tournament organizers.
During the segment, both players revealed details about their first breakups.
“The first breakup was in 2019. I was heartbroken badly. It took me a few months to recover,” Tsitsipas admitted.
When Berrettini was asked the same question, he initially dodged it with humor but eventually answered:
“2019, after three years. It wasn’t easy, but that’s life.”
When the interviewer followed up with, “Were you heartbroken, or did you break her heart?”, the Italian simply laughed, leaving the mystery unanswered.
Tournament Results: Mixed Fortunes for Tsitsipas and Berrettini
On the court, Tsitsipas reached the quarterfinals, where he lost in straight sets to qualifier Mattia Bellucci. Berrettini, on the other hand, suffered a first-round exit, falling to Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in a hard-fought three-set match.
The tournament finale saw Carlos Alcaraz and Alex de Minaur battling for the title on February 9.
What’s Next for Tsitsipas and Berrettini?
Stefanos Tsitsipas
Currently ranked World No. 12, Tsitsipas entered Rotterdam as a wild card and will now focus on the Middle Eastern swing. His upcoming schedule includes:
- Qatar Open (ATP 500) – Second appearance, after reaching the quarterfinals in 2018.
- Dubai Tennis Championships (ATP 500) – Returning after four years, previously a finalist in 2019 & 2020 (losing to Federer and Djokovic).
The Greek star has been struggling since falling out of the top 10 rankings in February 2024, marking the first time in five years. With just one ATP title at Monte Carlo Masters last season, he is determined to regain his momentum and push back into the top 10.
Matteo Berrettini
Former World No. 6 and 2021 Wimbledon finalist, Berrettini has faced injury struggles, dropping to World No. 92. However, his resurgence in 2024, where he won two ATP titles (Gstaad & Vienna), helped him climb back to World No. 32.
He also played a crucial role in Italy’s historic Davis Cup victory, their first since 1976, winning all three of his matches.
His upcoming schedule includes:
- Qatar Open (Doha)
- Dubai Tennis Championships
- Indian Wells Masters
- Miami Open
Berrettini has never reached a quarterfinal in these four tournaments and will be looking to break that trend with a strong showing.
