WATCH: Aryna Sabalenka in splits over cat forcing her to halt play against Ekaterina Alexandrova at Qatar Open
Feline Intruder Delights Aryna Sabalenka During Qatar Open Clash
A surprise visitor stole the show during Aryna Sabalenka’s second-round match against Ekaterina Alexandrova at the 2025 Qatar Open. A curious cat wandered onto the court, momentarily halting play and bringing a big smile to Sabalenka’s face.
The match itself was a thrilling battle, with Alexandrova mounting a comeback after dropping the first set to upset the top seed 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(5). With this victory, the Russian moves on to face Elise Mertens in the next round. Meanwhile, third seed Coco Gauff also suffered a shock exit, opening up the top half of the draw.
However, one of the most amusing moments of the match came during the second set when the feline intruder made its way onto the court just as Alexandrova was preparing to serve. Sabalenka, upon spotting the multi-colored cat, couldn’t help but smile. Adding to the hilarity, the cat managed to evade security with impressive agility, earning cheers from the crowd.
Animal interruptions in tennis are nothing new, but this wasn’t the first time a cat has disrupted play. At the 2024 Miami Open, a black-and-white feline made an appearance during Venus Williams’ first-round match against Diana Shnaider, seemingly eager to get the best seat in the house.
“I’ve Been Depressed After That Loss” – Sabalenka Opens Up on Australian Open Heartbreak
Following her early exit in Doha, things have gone from bad to worse for Sabalenka, who recently admitted to struggling with depression after her Australian Open final defeat to Madison Keys.
The World No. 1 had been aiming for a historic three-peat after triumphing in Melbourne in 2023 and 2024. Despite falling short, she tried to find positives in her journey.
“I’ve been depressed for a little bit after that tough loss in the finals. Looking back, I did everything I could. I left everything I had on the court. Even though I lost that match, I still think it was a great start,” she shared.
During her post-match press conference in Melbourne, Sabalenka candidly acknowledged the brutal reality of elite sports: “Nobody remembers the finalist.”
Now, with an unexpected early exit in Qatar, Sabalenka will have to regroup and refocus as she looks ahead to the rest of the season.
