Jessica Pegula Sets New WTA Record with Qatar Open Quarterfinal Run
Jessica Pegula has made history at the Qatar Open, reaching the WTA 1000 quarterfinals for the 15th time since 2020—the most of any player on tour in that span.
The 30-year-old American, currently ranked World No. 5, has bounced back impressively in the Middle East after a disappointing Australian Open campaign, notching key wins over Elina Svitolina and Daria Kasatkina in Doha.
Pegula Dominates Kasatkina to Secure Historic Feat
Facing Kasatkina for the fourth time, Pegula avenged her 2024 Charleston Open loss by securing a 6-3, 7-5 victory in what was a closely contested battle.
With this win, Pegula extends her consistency at the WTA 1000 level, further cementing her status as one of the most reliable performers on tour in recent years.
“It’s always tough against Daria, but I’m happy with how I played today. Reaching another quarterfinal at this level means a lot,” Pegula said after her win.
Who’s Next? A Showdown with Ekaterina Alexandrova
Pegula’s next challenge comes in the form of Ekaterina Alexandrova, who caused a huge upset by defeating World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka earlier in the tournament.
Alexandrova is currently on a seven-match win streak, having won the Linz Open before heading to Doha. Their head-to-head record stands at 1-1, with Alexandrova winning their most recent encounter at the 2024 Miami Open in three sets.
With both players in strong form, their Qatar Open quarterfinal clash promises to be an intense battle. Will Pegula continue her WTA 1000 dominance, or can Alexandrova extend her winning streak?
