After opting not to defend his Rotterdam Open title, the world No. 1 has been resting and preparing for his return to action later this month.

Sinner’s next tournament will be the Qatar Open, where he enters as the top seed, alongside Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, and Alex de Minaur, as the event debuts at the ATP 500 level in 2025.

However, while the world’s best prepare for Doha, one ATP star recently said farewell to the sport in Argentina—and Sinner took the time to send him a heartfelt message.

Jannik Sinner Pays Tribute to Diego Schwartzman Following Retirement

Diego Schwartzman, a former world No. 8, officially ended his ten-year professional career at the Argentina Open.

The Argentine fan-favorite extended his time on tour with a first-round victory over Nicolas Jarry, but his farewell match came in the round of 16, where he fell 2-6, 2-6 to Pedro Martinez.

With tears in the stands and emotional tributes on Court Guillermo Vilas, Schwartzman bid farewell in front of his home crowd.

Sinner, who shared the court with Schwartzman both as a teammate and opponent, took to social media to honor his fellow competitor:

“What a career. What a person. All the best for a new chapter.”

The message was in response to a post featuring their 2023 Monte Carlo Masters doubles match, where they fought back from 6-8 down in a deciding tiebreak to defeat Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.

Though they never teamed up again, the two players met four times in singles, with Sinner dominating the head-to-head battle.

His most memorable Grand Slam run came in 2020, when he reached the French Open semi-finals, defeating Dominic Thiem in a five-set thriller before falling to Nadal.

Despite never winning a major, Schwartzman cemented his place in tennis history, reaching a career-high of No. 8 in the world and claiming four ATP titles.

Nicknamed “El Peque” (Shorty) due to his 5ft 7in stature, Schwartzman proved that height is just a number, competing with the best in the world and earning the respect of fans and fellow players alike.

Now, as he begins a new chapter beyond professional tennis, the tennis world, including Sinner, recognizes his incredible contribution to the sport.
