Jasmine Paolini’s Remarkable Rise: From Dubai Breakthrough to Grand Slam Contender

A year ago in Dubai, Jasmine Paolini looked on the verge of elimination. Trailing 6-4, 4-2 to Beatriz Haddad Maia in the opening round, she faced match points and seemed destined for an early exit.

“Yeah,” Paolini recently recalled, “and 15-40, something like that? Almost lost the match. But, you know, it changed.”

That turning point led to the best season of her career. Paolini not only stormed back to win that match but went on to claim her first WTA 1000 title at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, defeating an elite field—including Leylah Fernandez, Maria Sakkari, Elena Rybakina, Sorana Cirstea, and, in the final, Anna Kalinskaya.

From Underdog to World No. 4

Before Dubai, Paolini’s only WTA title had come at a WTA 250 event in Slovenia. But her stunning breakthrough in Dubai propelled her into the world’s elite.

“You never know when your best tournament will come,” Paolini reflected. “Sometimes you start struggling—and then you find it.”

Find it, she did. Now ranked No. 4 in the world, Paolini is back in Dubai as the defending champion, looking to recreate the magic.

A Season of Historic Achievements

After her Dubai triumph, Paolini shattered expectations.

Grand Slam Breakthrough: She reached the fourth round at the Australian Open, before racing into the finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon—a meteoric rise for a player who had never made it past the second round in a major before.

Doubles Dominance: She and Sara Errani finished runners-up at Roland Garros before winning Olympic gold in Paris. She also clinched a doubles title in Beijing and was the only player at the WTA Finals to compete in both singles and doubles.

International Glory: Paolini capped off her year by sealing Italy’s Billie Jean King Cup triumph with a decisive singles victory.

Preparing for a New Challenge

Now, as Paolini embarks on 2025, she is determined to stay grounded.

“I’m trying to tell myself that this year is a different story,” she said. “We have to write a new chapter and not dwell on the past.”

Her main focus? Sharpening her serve and staying mentally strong amid rising expectations.

“I’m trying to keep expectations low,” she admitted. “But, of course, I think it’s tougher for me now.”

With confidence from her past successes and a relentless work ethic, Paolini is ready to prove that last season was only the beginning.
