Alex de Minaur says what he wants to happen to the next tennis player who is put in the same position as Jannik Sinner
Alex de Minaur Reacts to Jannik Sinner’s Three-Month Ban, Calls for Consistency in Future Cases
Alex de Minaur might be among the biggest beneficiaries of Jannik Sinner’s three-month suspension, given his struggles against the Italian. The Australian lost the 2024 Rotterdam Open final to Sinner and was defeated again at the 2025 Australian Open, extending his head-to-head record against Sinner to 0-10.
Now, with Sinner absent from the ATP Tour until May 4, de Minaur has moved on to the Qatar Open but has weighed in on the controversial ban. Speaking to BB Tennis, the World No. 8 questioned the unprecedented nature of the suspension.
“It’s tough because we have seen something which has never happened,” de Minaur stated. “In the past, bans have always been a year or two. It has always been much larger. If another player finds themselves in a similar position, I hope they get the same option.”
Popyrin on Sinner Ban: ‘A Tough Situation for Players’
The ban has divided opinion in the tennis world, with many questioning how Sinner managed to negotiate a shorter punishment with WADA. Critics argue that the World No. 1 got off lightly, as he will return in time for the French Open after missing just three months.
Australian Alexei Popyrin, currently ranked No. 27, also shared his perspective, hinting at a lack of transparency in the process.
“Everything was shut down, and no information was given,” Popyrin said. “A three-month ban is what it is at the end of the day. We’ll see him back in Rome, but I think it’s a tough situation, especially for a lot of players.”
Despite the controversy, Sinner’s return at the Rome Masters 1000 will be closely watched, with many wondering how the tennis community will react to his comeback.
