Drone Disrupts Zverev’s Match at Rio Open, World No. 2 Attempts to Strike It Down
A bizarre incident unfolded during the Rio Open quarterfinal between Alexander Zverev and Francisco Comesaña, as a drone flew over the court, briefly interrupting play. In a moment of frustration, the world No. 2 even attempted to hit the drone with a shot, creating an unusual scene in Brazil.
Zverev Stunned by Comesaña After Strong Start
Despite leading 3-0 in the third set, Zverev suffered a shock 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 defeat to the world No. 86 from Argentina. The loss marked the end of his Golden Swing campaign in South America, where he finished with three wins and two defeats.
Frustration Over Drone Disruption
After the match, Zverev admitted that the drone incident disrupted his focus and contributed to his surprising loss.
“I think I played at a better level than in Buenos Aires, but it’s a shame to end the tournament this way,” he said.
Despite the frustration, the three-time Grand Slam finalist had positive words about the event.
“I’ve enjoyed my time here in Rio, and I hope to be back. This is one of the best ATP 500 tournaments I’ve ever been lucky enough to take part in.”
Zverev’s Focus Shifts to Indian Wells
With Jannik Sinner’s three-month suspension, Zverev is set to be the top seed at Indian Wells. He will aim to defend his ranking points after last year’s quarterfinal finish, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz.
