Council leader Cllr Hans Mundry initially proposed the idea to honor Luke Littler’s World Darts Championship triumph.
In January, just weeks before turning 18, Littler became the youngest world champion in darts history, defeating three-time winner Michael van Gerwen in a commanding performance.
Born in Warrington, Littler expressed his gratitude, saying, “It is a real honor. Thank you to everyone in the town.”
Dressed in a grey Nike tracksuit, the 18-year-old attended the Warrington Borough Council meeting, where he was met with applause from those in attendance. This recognition follows another major honor, as Warrington Wolves recently renamed their stadium “The Luke Littler Stadium” in his name.
Cllr Mundry emphasized that this award acknowledges Littler’s remarkable achievements and the inspiration he provides to others. He remarked, “His rise has been meteoric, and his stunning victory at the World Darts Championship captivated the nation, solidifying his status as a major star in the sport.
“We are incredibly proud of Luke and his extraordinary accomplishments. His dedication, skill, and sportsmanship, along with his charitable efforts, make him a true role model for young people in Warrington and beyond.
“Luke is proof that with hard work and belief in your dreams, anything is possible.”
Littler’s list of achievements over the past 15 months is staggering. He first reached the 2024 world final at just 16 before securing the championship title in 2025.
His success reached its pinnacle last month when he lifted the coveted Ally Pally trophy. Soon after, he proudly showcased his championship win at Manchester United, a club close to his heart.
Beyond his world title, Littler has already secured 11 senior PDC titles, including victories in the Premier League, Grand Slam, and World Series Finals. However, his influence on the sport extends beyond just silverware.
The popularity of darts has surged alongside Littler’s rapid ascent, with the young star playing a key role in its growing mainstream appeal.
