“Furious and so sad” – Holger Rune reveals what led to his sudden Acapulco mid-match retirement after playing just 3 games
Rune’s Acapulco Exit: Food Poisoning Ends Disappointing Latin American Swing
Holger Rune’s Mexican Open campaign ended abruptly with a mid-match retirement, which he attributed to food poisoning. After a strong first-round win, Rune withdrew just 15 minutes into his second-round match against Brandon Nakashima.
“Had a food poisoning and was unable to play today,” Rune wrote on X, expressing his disappointment. “Absolutely not the way I wanted it to end.”
Rune’s exit adds to a string of illness-related withdrawals from the tournament, including Casper Ruud and Tommy Paul. This outbreak marred the event, which Rune had also enjoyed by attending player events.
This retirement caps off a challenging Latin American swing for Rune. He managed only one win, his first-round victory in Acapulco. His struggles began with an early loss in Rotterdam, followed by a first-round exit in Buenos Aires, where he revealed he was battling a fever and lingering effects from a virus contracted in Rotterdam. He subsequently withdrew from the Rio Open.
“Looking back, I think it was too early to play after my influenza last week,” Rune stated after his Buenos Aires loss. “My shoulder was not working and the whole body seemed extremely vulnerable.”
Despite the setbacks, Rune is expected to recover and compete in the upcoming Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells.
