Zverev’s Acapulco Exit Sparks Controversy After Upset Loss

Alexander Zverev’s abrupt departure from the Mexican Open has drawn criticism, following his stunning defeat to qualifier Learner Tien. Despite a pre-match commitment to a press conference, Zverev reportedly left the stadium immediately after his 6-3, 6-4 loss, while Tien was still celebrating on court.

Tennis insider Ben Rothenberg called for Zverev to be fined, stating on X that the world No. 6 “walked straight out of the ATP 500 Acapulco stadium and into a car to ride away into the night.”

This incident follows a string of disappointing results for Zverev. He recently exited the Argentina Open in the second round and fell short in the Acapulco quarterfinals.

Earlier in the year, Zverev reached the Australian Open final, where he was defeated by Jannik Sinner. Following that loss, he expressed self-doubt, stating he was “not good enough” for Grand Slams. However, he later regretted those comments, acknowledging Sinner’s superior performance and deserved victory.

“I was mentally extremely down and so I was very disappointed with the final and how [it] went,” Zverev told Tennis.com. “Now looking back at it, I regret what I said. I regret saying that after a Grand Slam final that I’m maybe not good enough.”

The Australian Open final represented a missed opportunity for Zverev’s first Grand Slam title, adding to the frustration of his recent tournament exits. The Acapulco incident has now placed his conduct under scrutiny.
