Laura Robson Advises Caution for Emma Raducanu in Coach Search

Laura Robson has urged Emma Raducanu to take a careful and measured approach when selecting her next coach.

The 22-year-old British star is currently searching for a new addition to her team after Nick Cavaday stepped down to prioritize his health. Since her remarkable US Open triumph in 2021, Raducanu has undergone multiple coaching changes, a factor that, along with persistent injuries, has hindered her progress on tour. She now hopes to establish stability and consistency as the season unfolds.

Robson’s Perspective on Raducanu’s Coaching Search

Since her breakthrough at Flushing Meadows, Raducanu has worked with several coaches, including Cavaday, Sebastian Sachs, Nigel Sears, Andrew Richardson, Torben Beltz, and Dmitry Tursunov. Her meteoric rise to stardom at a young age, combined with limited professional experience, placed immense pressure on her, making continuity within her coaching setup all the more crucial.

Robson, a former British No. 1, believes Raducanu must be meticulous in her selection process. Writing in her Sky Sports column, she shared her thoughts on the situation.

“Emma Raducanu has been out in the Middle East trying to build on the form we saw from her in Australia,” Robson noted. “She is competing really well and making sure she’s trying to do the right things on the court.

“I don’t think she’s in any rush, really, to employ someone new just for the sake of it. It has to make sense for her and it has to be the right person.

“There aren’t too many top-level coaches available who can commit to full-time travel, so options are pretty limited. You wouldn’t want to go into a new partnership without 100 percent confidence.”

Raducanu Prepares for Indian Wells Masters

Raducanu’s most recent appearance came at the Dubai Tennis Championships, where she reached the second round before falling 6-7(6), 4-6 to Karolina Muchova. Despite the loss, she delivered a determined performance, even overcoming a distressing incident early in the match that left her in tears.

Now, the former world No. 10 is set to return to action at the Indian Wells Masters, the third WTA 1000 event of the season. Raducanu, who reached the fourth round in 2023 before losing to Iga Świątek, will be looking to build on her recent performances while ensuring she has the necessary security measures in place following the incident in Dubai. Świątek, the current world No. 1, will enter the 2025 tournament as the defending champion.
