During Sky Sports’ coverage of Luke Littler’s match against Stephen Bunting in Exeter, commentator Wayne Mardle issued an apology to viewers after a light-hearted jab at Manchester United.

Stuart Pyke, discussing Bunting’s winless streak, made a playful remark about United’s struggles, comparing them to a “relief game” in the Premier League. “You don’t get a game against Man United thrown in in the Premier League do you? To ease the pressure,” Pyke quipped.

Mardle, laughing, then apologized to “everyone who is offended by that.” The joke referenced Manchester United’s current form, as they sit 14th in the Premier League, a far cry from their past successes.

The comment drew a reaction from Emma Paton, another commentator, and was expected to be a topic of discussion with Mark Webster later. Pyke clarified that the point was to emphasize the lack of easy matches in the Premier League Darts.

Mardle then focused on Bunting’s situation, warning him about the psychological impact of a prolonged losing streak. Bunting subsequently lost the match and remains winless in the Premier League.

Littler, a Manchester United fan, is also a supporter of Rugby League side Warrington Wolves. He recently stated he would prioritize Warrington Wolves winning the Super League over Manchester United winning the Premier League. “Ah, that’s so tough. I’ve seen Sir Alex Ferguson’s last league title, so I’d have to say Wire winning the league,” he said.
