Carlos Alcaraz Weighs in on Tennis’ Next ‘Big 3’ and His Battles Against Legends

Back in 2020, John McEnroe, an 11-time Grand Slam champion, described Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic as the sport’s greatest trio, urging fans to savor their era while it lasted. At the time, all three were still competing at the highest level. Now, however, only Djokovic remains, carrying the torch of their legendary legacy.

But amid this transition, a new star is rising. Hailing from the land of La Tomatina, Carlos Alcaraz has rapidly emerged as a force in tennis. With four Grand Slam titles already to his name, the young Spaniard recently shared his thoughts on whether the next generation could replicate the dominance of the original Big 3.

The Big 3: A Legacy That May Never Be Repeated

Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic are widely considered the greatest trio in men’s tennis history. Over nearly two decades, they amassed an astonishing 66 Grand Slam titles—Djokovic leading with 24, followed by Nadal with 22 and Federer with 20. Their reign went beyond trophies, as they collectively held the world No. 1 ranking for 947 weeks (over 18 years), with Djokovic (428), Federer (310), and Nadal (209) dominating the top spot.

From 2004 to 2023, one of them finished as the year-end world No. 1 every season, except for 2016 and 2022. They also occupied the ATP’s top three rankings together on eight occasions, underscoring their unparalleled consistency.

Reflecting on this incredible legacy, Alcaraz was candid about the challenge of replicating it.

“It’s complicated. They set the bar for tennis at a stratospheric level. There are many players capable of winning a Grand Slam and competing with the best. Young players—including myself—will fight for big titles,” he told El Nuevo Día.

However, he admitted that matching the legendary rivalry of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic is nearly impossible.

“To reach the level of that rivalry between Rafa, Federer, and Djokovic is practically impossible to repeat. We will have our battles, and I will have my battles with great players, but a rivalry like theirs will be almost impossible.”

Alcaraz & Sinner: The Next Big 2?

Among the rising stars, Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are leading the charge. Sinner had a stellar 2024, overcoming a three-month ban due to a doping controversy, and carried that momentum into 2025 by winning the Australian Open. Meanwhile, Alcaraz—hailed as a teen phenomenon—has already captured four Grand Slam titles, compared to Sinner’s three.

Together, they boast seven majors, an impressive feat for two young players. However, when stacked against the Big 3, their road to greatness remains long. To match Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic, they would need at least 35 more Grand Slam titles combined—an almost unimaginable task, especially with Djokovic still adding to his tally.

Facing the Legends: Alcaraz’s Experience Against the Big 3

While Alcaraz never faced Federer in an official ATP match, he did practice with him at the Rolex Shanghai Masters. However, he has battled both Nadal and Djokovic on multiple occasions.

Against Nadal, Alcaraz holds a slight edge, leading their head-to-head 2-1. His rivalry with Djokovic has been more intense, with the Serbian leading 5-3, including a victory over Alcaraz in the 2025 Australian Open quarterfinals.

Reflecting on these encounters, Alcaraz expressed his admiration for the trio.

“With Federer, I coincided much less. With Rafa in his last years, and with Djokovic, I am still competing. But it is a source of pride. They are three of the greatest in the history of our sport. To have shared the court with them—even for a short time—is incredible.”

He reserved special praise for Nadal, his childhood idol.

“Rafa has been my idol, and I have great respect and admiration for all three. Competing against them has been an unbelievable experience,” Alcaraz added.

A New Era, But an Unmatched Legacy

As tennis transitions into a new generation, Alcaraz and Sinner appear to be the frontrunners of the sport’s next great rivalry. However, as Alcaraz himself admitted, replicating the Big 3’s dominance will be a near-impossible feat.

For now, the young Spaniard remains focused on carving his own legacy—one that, while unique, will always be measured against the legendary trio that came before him.
